Earth Hour Scotland 2011
Thanks for the best Earth Hour yet!
Thanks to everyone for the phenomenal support you showed for WWF’s Earth Hour in Scotland this year.
At the stroke of 8.30pm on Saturday 26 March, thousands of members of the Scottish public united with millions of people on all seven continents in switching off their lights for the Hour.
Some of Scotland’s best known landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish Parliament, were plunged into darkness to mark Earth Hour along with a thousand other global landmarks such as Times Square in New York, Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls and the London Eye.
We had a terrific time at Edinburgh Castle at our official countdown event - former BBC weather presenter Heather Reid switched off the lights while the crowd were entertained by musicians, drummers, fire jugglers and a piper.
During the build up to the big switch off Scotland our panda mascot went on tour as Scotland became the first country in the world to secure the support of 100 per cent of its cities and local authorities for Earth Hour.
In addition, Scotland’s local authorities won an incredible 19 of the top 20 places in the WWF's 'lights-out' league table of 100 UK authorities during the final crucial hour – with Shetland pipping South Ayrshire to first place. Of some of the others Stirling finished 3rd; Edinburgh 5th, Glasgow 11th, and Aberdeen 14th.
Around the country people took part in local Earth Hour activities such as candlelit meals, Earth Hour cocktails, glow stick parties and light displays. Whatever you did, thanks for your involvement!
