Who’s getting involved in Earth Hour 2012?
We're working with several different public bodies, organisations, businesses, schools, universities and other groups to make Earth Hour a real success in Scotland in 2012. Find out here who's involved.
You can find out more about switch offs and events in your area on our 'What's happenning in your area' webpage
Local Authorities
We’re delighted that all 32 local authorities in Scotland are participating again this year – promoting the event, arranging switchoffs and organising events - in fact, twelve LAs have already been awarded our special Earth Hour badge to recognise their involvement:
Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus, City of Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow, Highlands, Perth & Kinross, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire, West Lothian.
Scottish Government and Public Bodies
We’d like to thank the Scottish Government for their continued financial support of this event. They are also encouraging all public bodies to get involved – you can download our Earth Hour toolkit for public bodies here.
Iconic Buildings and Landmarks
Congratulations to the Falkirk Wheel for being the first major landmark in Scotland to sign up to switch off for Earth Hour 2012! We’re hoping many others will join it – if you are linked to a Scottish iconic building or landmark and you’d like to know more – why not download our Iconic Buildings and Landmarks toolkit?
Schools
Almost 500 schools signed up to take part in Earth Hour 2011 – they will all receive the schools toolkit to guide them on 2012 activities. We’d like many more schools to join them – if you are a teacher and would like to know more, go to our Earth Hour schools page.
Historic Scotland
We are working closely with Historic Scotland to switch off some of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, not least Edinburgh Castle, and organise events and promotions to mark Earth Hour at various venues including stargazing at Holyrood.
Unison Scotland
Unison Scotland is keen that all their branches get involved in Earth Hour 2012 – and have worked with us to put together a toolkit to help branches plan their activities. If you’re a member of a Unison branch member, have a look at our toolkit for Unison branches today.
Eco-Congregations
Earth Hour is an ideal event for church communities to show their commitment to helping people and nature around the world. We’ve worked with Eco-Congregations on a toolkit describing what you can do.
Universities & colleges
Seventeen universities and colleges got involved last year and we’re pleased that already Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier and Dundee Universities and Motherwell College already have plans to get involved in 2012. If you work or study at a university or college in Scotland and want to get involved, contact earthhour@wwfscotland.org.uk
Political parties and MSPs
We’re hoping that all the main political parties and MSPs will show their support for the event again this year. If you’re a politician and you’d like to know what you can do, please contact us.
